Bungee jumper dangles for an hour at Macau attraction

A 30-year-old bungee jumper got stuck in midair at Macau Tower on Monday afternoon after a safety system was activated, possibly because of cold weather.

At 2:45pm, the man, a visitor to the city who holds a Russian passport, jumped from the 61st floor of the tower but was left dangling in the air 55 meters above the ground, Jornal San Wa Ou reported.

It took an hour for firefighters to reach the man and rescue him by using an aerial ladder.

When the man was rescued, he was shivering but conscious. Medical staff suspected that he might be suffering from hypothermia as the temperature was only around 7 degrees Celsius at the time of the accident, Jornal Do Cidadao reported.

The man was sent to the hospital for further treatment.

The operator of the Macau Tower Bungy Jump, AJ Hackett, said after an initial investigation that the man was left in the air because of the inadvertent activation of a safety system, possibly triggered by the cold weather, Apple Daily reported.

The Macau Tower Bungy Jump is 233 meters high, holding a Guinness World Record for the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. Jumpers leap from a platform and experience a free fall of about 200 meters before slowing down 30 meters from the ground and rebounding back up.

It costs 3,488 patacas (US$432) for a jump.

There have been no serious accidents at Macau Tower since the attraction opened in 2006.
