Hong Kong in danger of dengue outbreak: health official

Three more case of dengue fever were diagnosed on Thursday by the Centre For Health Protection (CHP), bringing the total number of locally contracted cases to seven in a week in Hong Kong.

The centre also identified one location – the Lion Rock Country Park in Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon – as being the potential hotspot for the mosquito-borne illness after three people who visited the park contracted dengue, Apple Daily reported.

A 31-year-old male, who lives in Kowloon’s To Kwa Wan, travelled to Zhongshan in China’s Guangdong and also visited the barbecue site at Lion Rock Park during the incubation period.

The second patient was a 61-year-old woman, who lives in Tak Long Estate in Kowloon’s Kai Tak and works at Lion Rock Park. She had been to Shunde in China’s Guangdong province during the incubation period.

The third case involved a 39-year-old woman who lives in Portland Street in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, and had been to the park for a barbecue during the incubation period.

The controller of the CHP, Dr Wong Ka-hing, said there was a possibility of the number of cases growing in a short period of time.

Ho Pak-leung, a University of Hong Kong bacteriologist, was concerned that the transmission of dengue fever had been identified from more than one source. Ho suggested closing the park before the virus spread to other parts of the city.

Pest control officers have been targeting adult mosquitoes at the park and a city-wide anti-mosquito operation will be conducted.

The center also urged people in the vicinity of Wong Tai Sin, particularly Lion Rock Park, Kwai Shing West Estate, Clear Water Bay Second Beach, Hillside Road, Highland Park, Sai Tso Wan Recreation Ground, Wing Yiu Street, Tak Long Estate and Portland Street who had symptoms of dengue fever to call the CHP’s hotline (2125 1122) for a laboratory investigation or referral.
