I’ve buzzed off my hair recently and feel like I’ve lost my feminine touch. My favourite style would be baggy oversized clothes but with the lack of inches in my hair, I often get mistaken for a boy. A lot of people mock me due to my tomboy nature. Is there any way I can keep my street style but add a more feminine touch? I’m a skater so it’s important that I wear trousers rather than a skirt.

Thanks for writing in, Rochelle! I actually find boyish haircuts cool, because they really draw attention to your face and look edgy. Plus, not everyone looks great with hair like that.
Better Than Oversized
In case you haven’t heard yet, I’m not in favor of oversized clothes simply because they never make anyone look good. If you’re curvy, you end up looking bigger. If you’re on the leaner side, you end up drowning in fabric.
Instead of going for very baggy clothing which hides your shape and lets you be mistaken a boy, go for a relaxed fit which is slightly loose. It allows you to move comfortably without any awkward bunching at the ankles of your pants, or your T-shirt hanging on your frame.
Try jogger pants instead of sweatpants, and tapered jeans or trousers instead of baggy jeans. The jogger pants are usually elasticized at the ankles and still give you some flexibility. The tapered silhouette means there’s more room from your hips to the knees, which is great when you need to lean or crouch on your skateboard.
Try Slim Fits
Before you start protesting, do note that the slim-fit style isn’t the same as “tight.” Tight is what those Olympic speed skaters and swimmers wear to be more aerodynamic.
Wearing slim-fit styles also minimizes your resistance against wind when you skate but to a lesser degree. They also show that you’re a girl and that you like your figure! Mixing slim-fit pieces with relaxed styles gives you more room for color and textural play, too. T-shirts, tanks and sweatshirts in a slimmer fit are easy to layer with other pieces, whereas piling on one baggy layer after another can make you look like the Michelin Man.
Tastefully Bare Some Skin
Since it’s summer, now is the perfect time to try wearing crop tops, one-shoulder tops and even semi-sheer pieces. If you’re not used to wearing revealing clothes, then this is a good baby step. Crop tops can be anything from bellybutton level to something akin to a sports bra, and you can surely find a comfortable length between that. Bonus is that they look awesome with high-waist pants! YesStyle also carries tees with mesh insets at the lower half that offer a good compromise between showing some skin and staying covered where it’s necessary.
If you don’t want to show too much skin, that’s perfectly acceptable, too. For the feminine touches you want, it can be as simple as incorporating lighter and more vibrant colors like pastels, or vivid hues like jewel tones, and tempered with metallic details like grommets. You can also add whimsical accessories like cute animal earrings or brooches, a transparent belt with a heart-shaped buckle, or sheer socks with tiny red hearts or pompoms at the back. They don’t always have to be big and bold.
But at the end of the day, Rochelle, it’s all up to you — whether you feel comfortable with these changes, or you’re perfectly fine with what you wear. After all, it’s your body, your style, your personal preferences. If you don’t feel like you need to conform, that’s okay. That’s who you are and that’s not a bad thing.
P.S. If you’re sending a question, please don’t forget to include any helpful information about your body type or shape, your tastes or personality. You can include a selfie (link only please) or a photo of your clothes (which I will never publish without pre-approval). Thank you!
