Hi, I’m having troubles with finding the right styles for me as well as being comfortable enough to try new things. I’m 15 around 5’3-4 in height and I’m 50.44 kg, I’m probably the skinniest in my family and even though I actually like my weight when I’m alone, when I stand by my cousin and my sister I suddenly feel self-conscious, they both have curves and a butt, and they are always praised on it, not to mention they both have their own individual style that flatters them.
I really want to find my own style and I love Korean fashion a lot! I’m concerned maybe I won’t look all that great in it, I enjoy dancing and working out, I also enjoy helping people and creating art, I want a style that can be cute, classy, but also comfortable. I really love the Korean street fashion and the tomboyish fashion, I’ve always had a hard time with my body and accepting it, and I can’t tell you the amount of times that I’ve hesitated to buy clothes or even if I did buy clothes I never wear them, I actually tend to wear the most dull clothes I can find because I feel like wearing anything else isn’t going to look good for me. I hope you can help me with what I need! I’d really be thankful for it!
Kirra, 15/Idaho, USA
Dear Kirra, if you suddenly wake up one morning, and you find that you have the exact same body shape as your sister or cousin, will it stop you from comparing her body to yours? Chances are, it won’t. Because human nature is flawed like that, and yes, we succumb to insecurity too often.
I’m telling you this now because you’re young and your whole life is ahead of you! Instead of always focusing on how you don’t have a butt or curves, think about how lean and mean your body is because you exercise and you like dancing! Not everyone likes to work out, and as young as you are, you are already aware of how important it is. Give yourself credit for your self-discipline, girl, because you’ve got it!
Now, I’ll try to fulfill your wish for “cute, classy and comfortable” options!
Cute: Spaghetti-Strap Dresses and Tennis Skirts
The tennis skirt trend is going strong at YesStyle, with the pleated versions being crowd favorites! No surprises there because they’re seriously cute. They can really show off your legs, which should look great from all that dancing. The short length of tennis skirts is ideal for petites like you, Kirra, so take advantage of it! Pair with cute fitted tees with vibrant fruit prints or classic nautical stripes.
For a slightly dressier option, spaghetti strap dresses are what I recommend. They come in all sorts of patterns and styles, but I suggest you go for a mid-thigh to knee-length version with a drawcord or elasticized waist. Why? So you don’t look shapeless. You can choose if you want extra embellishments like sashes, ruffles, tie-back details or even cutouts.
Classy: Lace Blouses and Camisoles
Camisoles are one of the biggest trends since last year, and still going strong. This versatile piece can alternate with your tank tops to give your summer wardrobe some versatility. Camisoles can come in different fabrics like luxe velvet, lace or satin, and comfy linen or cotton, so it can be the statement piece in your OOTD.
Lace can usually be found as trim on garments, but a lace top is all about grace and softness. Eyelet lace is a favorite for summer fashion because it looks crisp and refreshing. Pair it with distressed denim shorts and sandals and you’ve got the perfect summer outdoor concert outfit. Finish with a cute cross-body mini satchel.
Comfortable: Sleeveless Playsuits and Jumpsuits
Playsuits and jumpsuits offer you different options for length. If your day calls for a lot of activity, playsuits are your best bet. They’re a complete outfit so you only have to choose accessories and shoes to go with them.
The same goes for jumpsuits, but these, in my opinion, have a more upscale vibe than its shorter sibling. Most jumpsuit styles these days have wide or even cropped, slim-fit pantlegs. Want to go for a little athletic vibe? Get the cropped style. Going somewhere fancy for the evening — even if it’s just a movie with friends, or dinner with family? Opt for the wide-leg style. Some jumpsuits may require a base layer, and a camisole is perfect for that. Both jumpsuits and playsuits can be worn with any kind of footwear. Espadrille wedges work with both to really pull off a chic, resort-style look.
Don’t forget to add textures to your outfits to make them pop. Woven bags, raffia hats, paisley bandannas, floral hairbands and oversized hoop earrings — the works!
Trying something new can always be scary. We’re afraid of possible negative reactions, ridicule, or simply just feeling like a fish out of water. Yet the only way to change is to TRY. So add one more C-word to your new style mantra: CONFIDENCE. Good luck!
