Number of jobless Filipinos decrease in June 2018

A recent survey says the number of jobless Filipinos decreased to an estimated 8.6 million people in the second quarter of 2018.

The Social Weather Stations (SWS) conducted a survey from June 27 to 30 and found that the number of jobless Filipinos decreased to 19.7% from 23.9%, or an estimated 10.9 million people, in the first quarter survey conducted in March, Rappler reported.

The number of jobless Filipinos consisted of those who voluntarily left their old jobs at 9.5% (4.2 million), those who voluntarily lost their jobs at 6.8% (three million) and jobseekers new to the work force at 3.4% (1.5 million).

The survey showed that labor force participation decreased to 68.3%, or 43.8 million, from 71.4%, or 45.8 million, in March. Filipinos who believe there are more job opportunities dropped by two points from 49% in March to 47% in June. Those who believe there will be fewer jobs available increased from 12% to 15%.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the figure was consistent with recently released government data from the Labor Force Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authorities, adding that the employment rate had improved to 94.6%, GMA News reported.
